WHAT ARE RHYMING WORDS?
Rhyming words are the words that have the same ending sounds.
For example: Cat, bat, rat, hat, mat, fat.
Well science too has a pair of amazing rhyming words...
aDsorption and aBsorption.
Though these words are rhyming, they have a very different meaning..
Adsorption: It is a surface phenomenon that takes place only on the surface of a substance. In other words, it is the process of accumulation of substances only on the surface.
For example:
(a) When you wash your hands, water wets only the epidermis (skin).
(b) When chalk is dipped in ink and taken out immediately, you'll find the chalk coloured but when you break you'll notice that the bulk (inner surface of the chalk ) is still uncoloured.
Well above phenomenon are obviously due to adsorption.
Absorption: It is a bulk phenomenon that takes place throughout the substance. The absorbed substance spreads uniformly throughout the substance.
For example:
(a) When cotton is dipped in coloured water, the whole lump of cotton acquires the coloured as water gets absorbed throughout the lump of cotton.
(b) When sponge is dipped in water, the whole body of sponge becomes wet. The water gets absorbed throughout the sponge.
By the way, did you notice that you learnt something very interesting today?
